O BREAD OR TO NOT BREAD?
A question I often get asked a lot, is whether or not to eat bread. I notice that people are often cutting out bread completely in an effort to lose weight or support gut health, but is this necessary?
In short, no! Bread CAN contain a multitude of nutrients, but this really does depend on what type of bread.
White conventional bread is processed and a source of carbohydrates known as simple carbs which can contribute to imbalanced blood sugar levels due to the quick spike in these sugars which then results in a huge drop of energy (hello 3pm slumps & sugar cravings!). As well as containing a variety of preservatives, additives and salt which can be detrimental to our health.
However, wholemeal variety’s contain fibre which will actually support with our gut health and contributes to a more balanced source of energy as it is slower to digest. Wholegrain versions also contain B vitamins!
My advice really is to go for quality over quantity. Look for a bakery of bread supplier that sells good quality bread with minimal ingredients focusing on a wholegrain such as:
1️⃣Rye Bread
2️⃣Sourdough bread
3️⃣Wholewheat bread
And remember to always balance your carbs to make a complete meal just like I have here by adding protein (smoked salmon) & fats (avocado)
(if you are coeliac or very sensitive to gluten then this is a whole different subject & something I will post about soon!)
